Journalist Alina Anghel (Timpul) victim of an attack in the centre of Chisinău

Alina Anghel, journalist with the weekly Timpul was attacked by two unidentified persons on Wednesday morning in Chisinau. The Interior Ministry statement that Alina Anghel had been the victim of an ordinary ribbery raised a wave of criticism. Alina Anghel who had to be hospitalized called the police conclusion „at least hasty“.

The director of the weekly Timpul, Constantin Tanase has said he is convinced that the attack against Alina Anghel is directly connected with two subjects she has been investigating lately: a dubious transaction between DAAC-Hermes Company and the government of Moldova(luxury automobiles for district officials paid with public money) and a Jeep Nissan XTerra received by Interior Minister Gheorghe Papuc from DAAC-Hermes chairman Vasile Kirtoka.

The Moldovan Social Democratic Party (PSDM) released a statement describing the attack against the Timpul journalist as an "attempt to intimidate the free press, to shut it up, in order to deprive voters of information sources that reveal irregularities and illegal dealings." According to PSDM, the attack against Anghel "demonstrates again that the civil rights are compromised in Moldova“.
