At the mayoral elections held in Chisinau on 27 November only 23 percent of the eligible voters cast ballots, significantly below the one-third of the electorate needed to validate the poll. The ballot was Chisinau's third attempt to elect a mayor this year: elections on 10 and 24 July were also declared invalid due to low turnout. The mayor post has been vacant since April, when Serafim Urechean stepped down to take up a parliamentary seat .
