Bucharest: CNSAS to verify the past of candidates for Patriarch Crozier

CNSAS, the body entrusted with the archives of the Communist political police Securitate, confirmed on August 7 that it would search for possible files under the names of some 20 high-ranked priests susceptible to be elected the Patriarch of the Romanian Ortodox Church.

The Romanian Civic Forum (RCF) had earlier demanded CNSAS to verify if any of the candidates for the Romanian Patriarch had colaborated with the Communist secret police. "Those who made deals with the Devil must step back and quit. We believe that media pressure may determine them to withdraw from the race", said RCF president Adrian Iurascu.
