Chişinău: draft legislation banning teachers and students from taking part in protest actions

The government approved on Wednesday a draft legislation that bans teachers and students from taking part in protest actions - an initiative proposed by Communist parliamentarian Iuri Eriomin.

Some cabinet members expressed reservations about the draft law. According to BASA-Press, Justice Minister Vasile Dolghieru warned that the proposal violated human rights and the constitutional freedoms regarding participation in meetings.

Given these objections, Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev asked the legislature to specify that the ban would be limited to instances when teachers and students might be forced to take part in protest manifestations.

A Christian Democratic (PPCD) parliamentarian said that the initiative was a new attempt of the ruling party to prevent the participation of teachers and students in protests and to silence them when the Communists adopt unfair decisions.
