Mircea Geoană defends the adoption draft law

Foreign Minister Mircea Geoană considers Richard Armitage’s latest statement on the Romanian adoption draft law a sign of concern for the Romanian institutionalized children. Refering to the International Herald Tribune article in which Undersecretary of State Armitage called the draft law a tragedy for the children, Mircea Geoană construed the text as pleading for a more relaxed form of the adoption legislation.

The Foreign Minister added that given the recent critical remarks by the European Parliament the Romanian authorities preferred to choose a restrictive formula for adoptions. Mircea Geoană concluded that for the time being Romania directed its attention to the April, 27 when European Commissioner Gunther Verheugen took part in the foreign policy debate of the European Parliament.
