At the congress of the opposition Social Democratic Party, former Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana, who ran against former President Ion Iliescu, won the chairmanship of the party. Geoana was elected with 964 votes as compared to Iliescu’s 530 votes. After the poll, Geoana said the party could now regain its credibility.
