Former Moldovan Defense Minister Pasat declares hunger strike in prison

Former Moldovan Defense Minister Valeriu Pasat, sentenced to 10 years in prison for abuse of office in connection with the sale of MiG-29 fighter jets to the United States, declared a hunger strike on April 19 to protest inadequate medical treatment. Pasat's lawyer, Gheorghe Amihalachioae said: "My client has been examined, but has not been informed of his diagnosis and he cannot get appropriate medical treatment."

In February, Moldovan prosecutors filed additional charges against Valeriu Pasat for allegedly plotting a coup and planning the assassination of a top politician.
