Chişinău: Communist authorities try to bully opposition jurnalist

Constantin Tănase, managing editor of the daily "Timpul," faces prosecution after calling for Moldovans to get rid not just of President Vladimir Voronin and his Communist Party, but also of the Russian presence in Moldova.

Prosecutors said on February 12 that they are investigating Tanase on suspicion of disturbing the "peaceful cohabitation of the country's ethnic communities, and endangering public security."

Constantin Tănase insisted that he did not want to expel Moldova's Russian minority but only to remove Russian troops from Transnistria and Russian influence from Moldova's domestic politics and international relations.

Tănse added that Moldovan Communist authorities attempt "to silence the independent media and to intimidate other journalists who do not have a good relationship with the Communist regime."

Moldovan professional organizations have expressed support for Tănase.
