President Iliescu's visit to Monteal: Statue unveiled, speech interrupted

Romanian exiles protested on Saturday during a ceremony in Montreal for visiting Romanian President Ion Iliescu. The vociferous cries of protest and outrage forced Ion Iliescu to abandon a speech dedicating a square and a statue in a park of the Candian city. President Iliescu, the Romanian Education Minister Razvan Teodorescu and other officials had gathered to inaugurate Romania Square and unveil a statue of Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu. The booing demonstrators reminded Iliescu that he had ordered in 1990 thousands of miners from the Jiu Valley to come to Bucharest and brutally supress the marathon pro democracy meetings in the University Square.
