Romanian President Traian Basescu and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko met in Bucharest on 21 April. After the meeting the two presidents announced the creation of the Basescu – Yushchenko Commission whose task would be to help resolve bilateral problems. They also said that they had discussed means of resolving Moldova's Transdniester conflict. Yushchenko said that the conflict would be a major focus of the GUUAM summit, set to take place on 22 April in Chisinau. Yushchenko added:. "I have a feeling that Ukraine and Romania will play an essential role in the Transdniester conflict settlement."
