Vladimir Voronin asks in Bruxelles and Strasbourg for EU assistance in border control

During his visit to the EU in Brussels on 7 June, Vladimir Voronin handed EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana a letter, signed also by Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, asking the EU to offer assistance in establishing an international customs control on the Transdniester strech of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border. Solana told journalists that Brussels needs to analyze the letter before deciding how to react.

On 8 June Voronin travelled to Strasbourg on 8 June to discuss the same issue with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Parliament President Josep Borrell Fontelles.

"Moldova firmly favors the involvement of the European Union, the United States, and Romania in the negotiations on the Transdniester settlement" Voronin said at a news conference on 8 June. Voronin added that the talks in the current five-party format involving Russia, Ukraine, and OSCE have proven fruitless. Voronin also stressed that an unconditional and complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Transdniester could speed up the resolution of the Chisinau-Tiraspol conflict.
