The Legislative Council rejected the proposal submitted for approval by six UDMR parlamentaries and concerning the autonomy status for the Szeckler region. The Council considered that the goals set forth by the legislative initiators – protection of Magyar identity, expression of historical identity, obtaining juridical status for the autonomous region within Romania – aimed in fact to create a distinct state entity parallel to the national unitary Romanian state.
