Igor Smirnov, leader of the breakaway Moldovan region of Transdniester, told journalists on 19 July that elections to Tiraspol's Supreme Soviet will be held in December. According to BASA, Smirnov said he made this decision after his talks with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko last week.
