Former advisor to president Voronin describes Transdniester as ballast for Moldova

Sergiu Mocanu, former adviser to Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin, suggested that Moldova should jettison its claims to Transdniester in order to hasten its entry into the EU. In an interview with the Russian newspaper "Vremya novostei", Sergiu Mocanu described the secessionist region as "ballast" that could hold back EU membership for 15-20 years. "Since the Transdniester conflict is no longer solvable, Moldova should recognize European integration as its top priority," he said. Mocanu added that Moldovans now have "more relatives in Italy than on the opposite bank of the Dniester."
