Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin sacked by decree Defence Minister Victor Gaiciuc. Prior to his decision, during a meeting of the Supreme Council of Security, President Voronin had strongly criticised the activities of the Defence Ministry and of the Information and Security Service.
On August 28, a committee of the Defence Ministry announced that large quantities of arms and munitions had been embezzled from the army's depots.
