Romanian Parliament rejects President's call for a referendum on the uninominal vote

Romanian parliamentarians failed to approve president Basescu's demand for a referendum on the uninominal vote. The proposal would have passed with 235 ballots, but only 233 parliamentarians voted in favor of the referendum.

The president may open the procedures for a referendum even if the Parliament rejects the project. Only two parties declared themselves openly against the referendum: The Hungarian Democratic Union and the far right Greater Romania Party.
