Romanian Senate rejects law creating new anti-corruption body


On Februry 9, the Senate rejected the organic law approving the ordinance that turned the National Anti-corruption Prosecutors' Office (PNA) into an anti-corruption department (DNA) of the Public Ministry. According to Justice Minister Monica Macovei, the rejection of the ordinance did not mean DNA could no longer continue its investigations: "For the time being, the ordinance cannot be considered invalid, as the rejection law must first be promulgated by President Traian Basescu.

U.S Embassy in Bucharest expressed concern over the Senate's vote.
