Ukrainian Foreign Minister decries idea of a referendum in Transdniester

During a visit to Chisinau on June 26, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk said Kyiv would not recognize the results of a proposed independence referendum in Transdniester. Following meetings with Moldovan political leaders, Borys Tarasyuk added that "invoking Kosovo and Montenegro was no legal basis for the separatists to raise the issue of a referendum."

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk also said Kyiv would not reverse new customs rules on the Transdniestrian segment of its border with Moldova since the new government of Yuliya Tymoshenko was unlikely to change the customs regime in the Dniester region, as this approach was in principle approved when Tymoshenko was prime minister.

Intended to combat smuggling and supported by the European Union, the rules require that all goods bound for Ukraine that move through the Transdniestrian section of the border have a Moldovan stamp.
